Indicating desiccant disks are round, flat containers of desiccant that can be adhered to the inside walls of containers or other compartments to guard against moisture. The desiccant gel inside the disks changes color as ambient moisture is adsorbed. The color change from orange to pale yellow allows users to visually determine that the disk has reached its adsorption capacity and should be replaced.
Although products like chemicals, powdered goods and other sensitive components can be extremely hygroscopic (moisture absorbing) in nature, their shapes, forms and sizes can make traditional desiccant protection difficult. Desiccant bags and packets, for instance, can be lost or forgotten if dropped directly into powdered mixtures. They can also create difficulties if space is of concern.
Indicating desiccant disks are ideal when desiccant protection is necessary, but direct contact with the desiccant is not desired. Disks are small and effective, and can be conveniently applied to most surfaces. And, because they clearly indicate when the desiccant should be replaced, users know their products will always be properly protected.
At 80 percent relative humidity and 25°C, the desiccating disk has an adsorption capacity of = 16 percent. Residual moisture is = 3 percent.
